Road to the World Cup 2022
Football Tournament Event - 22 June 2022, Stade de Varembé, Geneva
16 Jun 2022

In cooperation with the United Nations Geneva Football Club and the Perception Change Project in the Office of the Director-General UNOG, the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations at Geneva is organizing an event for a football tournament entitled “Road to the World Cup 2022.”

The 2022 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup is emblematic of the immense value of sport as a unifying tool to promote cohesion, tolerance, and respect, striving for a peaceful world in line with the principles and values enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

Against that backdrop, this event will be an opportunity to reflect on the values of football: their connection with the Sustainable Development Goals; and to promote social welfare, health activities, unity in diversity, respect, gender and inclusiveness. It is the sporting event of the year that will allow delegates in Geneva to connect, exchange and embrace the common values of cooperation and solidarity.

The competition will involve eight (8) teams of delegates representing the regional groups of:

1. African States
2. Arab States
3. Asia-Pacific States
4. European States
5. Gulf Cooperation Council States
6. North, Central American and Caribbean States
7. Oceania States
8. South America States

The tournament is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 22 June 2022, from 12:00 to 18:00 at State de Varembé in Geneva, close to the Palais des Nations.

This event is organized with the generous support of Qatar Airways, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in Qatar, and the Qatar National Human Rights Committee.

Entrance is free, so come and support your regional group!

* Abdoul-Wali Mahdi is the Executive Director of the United Nations Geneva Football Club.
