The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) plays a central role in the United Nations system’s efforts to advance sustainable development.

As a department of the UN Secretariat, it provides in-depth analytical and technical support to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its subsidiary bodies. It also supports the work of the General Assembly’s Second Committee, which deals with economic and financial matters, and its Third Committee, which focuses on social, humanitarian and cultural issues.

However, UN DESA’s role extends far beyond institutional support. The Department helps Member States analyze and respond to the major economic, social and environmental challenges of our time. In doing so, it contributes to informed public policy, fosters multilateral dialogue and promotes international cooperation in support of sustainable and inclusive development.

At the heart of this work is the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Through its analytical work, data, expertise and support for intergovernmental processes, UN DESA helps turn international commitments into concrete action.

This issue of UN Today looks back at the history and evolution of UN DESA, and features an interview with Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and outlines the changes that have shaped UN DESA’s work over the decades.
