Editorial – June 2023
1 Jun 2023

At the end of the First World War, the world established that a universal and lasting peace could only be built on the basis of social justice. Thus, in 1919, the International Labour Organization (ILO) was created. In 1946, the ILO became the first specialized agency of the United Nations and the only one that brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers in its executive bodies.

Every year, at the beginning of June, thousands of participants from all over the world meet in Geneva where the International Labour Conference is held to determine the main focuses of the organization. Throughout the years, the ILC’s work has led to the establishment of 400 labor-related instruments, including conventions, recommendations and protocols.

The 2023 session of the Conference will be held from June 5th to 16th, and will deal with issues related to the transition to sustainable and inclusive economies, quality apprenticeships and worker protection.

Last December, the ILO Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo, spoke to us about the role the ILO can play in addressing the changes facing the world of work. In this issue of the magazine, we invite readers to learn more about the inside work of the ILO, whose mission is more crucial than ever at a time when social regression in many parts of the world is jeopardizing rights at work, the creation of decent jobs and the development of social protection.
