The Geneva School of Economics and Management not only provides state-of-the-art education, but also creates and disseminates knowledge, collaborating with the Geneva community.
Building on a history of over 100 years, the Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM) of the University of Geneva has the mission of educating responsible leaders for a diverse and changing society. About 2,000 students are enrolled in GSEM’s state-of-the-art undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs in management, economics, finance, business analytics, statistics, and information systems. Focusing on the interdisciplinary areas of analytics/digital, governance, and sustainability, the GSEM benefits from a “Geneva Advantage” – its unique location in Geneva, a region that is home to many international organizations, non-profit organizations, multinational corporations, and financial institutions, together with its dedicated staff of about 200, including 60 internationally recognized faculty members.
Educate responsible leaders
The GSEM offers a bilingual Bachelor program in Economics and Management, which gives our students a solid grounding in the two complementary fields. Six master programs are available, in Economics, Management, Statistics, Wealth Management, Commodity Trading and Business Analytics, where students benefit from small class sizes, evidence-based knowledge, innovative learning methods, and frequent interactions with academics and expert practitioners. Six doctoral programs complete this offer, providing a high-quality education for an academic career in the fields of economics, econometrics, management, statistics, finance, and information systems.
In addition to those core programs, GSEM’s continuing education offers more than forty programs including an Executive MBA. The School combines academic research and professional expertise to meet today’s and tomorrow’s complex organizational challenges. Covering fields as varied as management, health, human resources, international organizations, aviation, non-profit organizations, supply chain, project management, business management, commodity trading or CSR, the GSEM offers a wide range of Certificates and Diplomas of Advanced Studies. Several Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), including one on International Organizations Management, are also available.
The GSEM has integrated ethics, responsibility, and sustainability in programs’ courses and learning goals and objectives. The School has been an Advanced Signatory of the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) since 2017. The PRME engages business and management schools to ensure they provide future leaders with the skills needed to balance economic and sustainability goals, while drawing attention to the Sustainable Development Goals and aligning academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact.
Create & Disseminate Knowledge
The GSEM currently has 60 faculty members creating and disseminating knowledge at the forefront of their fields. In particular, the School is committed to advance scholarship in responsible management and sustainable business practices. Several faculty members have a significant focus on ethics, responsibility, and sustainability in their research, in areas such as business and human rights; responsible leadership; sustainable finance; responsible management; and behavioral philanthropy. Our faculty also includes their own research in their teaching by having students read academic articles, discuss the research topics, and develop student projects related to the research.
Throughout the year, the School organizes public conferences and discussion panels on public interest issues, as well as research seminars where internationally recognized scholars present their latest research. Last year, we had the honor of welcoming Professor Bengt Holmström, the 2016 Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, who presented our School’s annual Solari Lecture. In the context of the Dies Academicus, Professor Henry Donnan Jacoby (MIT Sloan School of Management) gave a public Lecture on Global Climate Change and the Role of Research and Policy Analysis.
Forge Partnerships
The GSEM collaborates closely with several sectors that are highly relevant for the Geneva community, such as multinational corporations, NGOs, international organizations, foundations, and financial services firms. The School has Competence and Innovation Centers focusing on research areas with particular relevance for organizations.
Amongst them, the i2i Hub seeks to act as a catalyst for innovation in International Organizations. Noting that organizations may struggle to inspire entrepreneurial behavior and lack the structures to catalyze innovative ideas, the i2i Hub accompanies their key partners in their innovation journey. In 2019, the GSEM launched the Geneva Center for Business and Human Rights – the first human rights center at a European business school. The Center works with companies to identify business models that enable profits and principles to co-exist. It offers companies a safe space to discuss pressing human rights challenges and train future leaders to develop and integrate human rights standards in their respective industry contexts.
