The mission of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) includes tackling the global drug problem, combating organised crime and terrorism, addressing corruption, money laundering and economic crime, and promoting fair and effective criminal justice systems.

UNODC is headquartered in Vienna and was established in 1997 through the merger of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and the Centre for International Crime Prevention. It fulfils its mandate by supporting Member States, criminal justice institutions and law enforcement agencies in three key areas: policy development, research and data analysis, and capacity-building through training and technical assistance.

This issue of the magazine offers an overview of UNODC’s work, featuring an interview with its Executive Director, Monica Juma, who took up the post on 11 May 2026, alongside articles highlighting the importance of the Office’s activities. These contributions are particularly timely as rapid technological advances have opened up new crime pathways and make it increasingly challenging to combat the very threats UNODC works to keep at bay.
